They don't make 'em like they used to! Here's a catchphrase I truly believe in when it comes to furniture quality. I choose to work on vintage furniture made of solid wood, no MDF (medium density fiberboard). I particularly enjoy working with mahogany, a very durable hardwood that was very popular in the early 20th century. Many early pieces were manufactured using veneers, a thin layer of hardwood, usually thinner than 1/8 of an inch bonded, or glued with adhesive, to a cheaper surface that is hidden below. Either way, the “bones” of all pieces I work on must be absolutely solid before I choose it for refinishing as I expect each piece to provide decades of enjoyment to my customers.
